When His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, assumed office, he pledged to take the hard decisions needed to put Nigeria on a sustainable path. One of those decisions is ensuring that our students remain in school. This week marked a historic turning point for Nigeria’s tertiary education system, as we reached a new agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Effective 1 January 2026 and subject to renegotiation every three (3) years, the agreement introduces key reforms, including: • A 40% upward review of academic emoluments to improve morale, competitiveness, and reverse brain drain. • A revised salary structure comprising CONUASS and the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), supporting research, publications, conferences, professional development, and teaching resources. • A new Professorial Cadre Allowance for full-time Professors and Readers. • Earned Academic Allowances that are clearly defined, transparent, duty-based, and linked to productivity. I extend my sincere appreciation to: • The Government Re-Negotiating Committee, ably led by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, and its distinguished members; • The ASUU Re-Negotiating Team, under the leadership of Professor Pius Piwuna, as well as the immediate past ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, and his team; • The National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, whose diligence ensured this agreement took effect from 1 January 2026. This administration recognises that 20 years of challenges cannot be resolved in two and a half years. However, under the leadership of President @officialABAT , GCFR, we will continue to confront all issues squarely—with fiscal realism, dialogue, and mutual respect. On behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Federal Ministry of Education, I reaffirm our unwavering commitment to faithful implementation, continuous engagement, and sustained reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
