Fisayo Ademuwagun @Tolu_7085 People celebrate Yar'adua like he was one of Nigeria's best presidents. Let me show you why that's wrong with facts, not feelings. The subsidy truth people don't tell you. Obasanjo was increasing fuel price to reduce subsidy burden. When he left in 2007 fuel was ₦75 per litre. Yar'adua came in, reduced it back to ₦65 and kept it there. Sounds like a good man right? Wrong. Think of it like this you're running a shop that is losing money every month because you're selling below cost price. Your manager was slowly adjusting the prices to stop the bleeding. Then a new manager comes, drops the price back down and smiles for the cameras. The customers loved him. The shop kept bleeding. Between 2008 and 2010 Yar'adua paid ₦1.8 trillion in fuel subsidy. In 2008 alone ₦631 billion. In 2009 ₦469 billion. In 2010 ₦667 billion. And this was during the highest oil prices in history $147 per barrel. Money was coming in from everywhere. Instead of using that oil boom to fix the refineries, build infrastructure and wean Nigeria off subsidy dependency he used it to keep fuel cheap and look popular. He was not managing an economy. He was buying applause with Nigeria's future. What did that decision cost us? Nigeria spent $74.39 billion on fuel subsidy between 2005 and 2021. The momentum Yar'adua killed by reversing Obasanjo's price adjustments added years to that bill. The subsidy that Tinubu finally removed in 2023 would have consumed ₦52 trillion by 2026 76% of the entire national budget. The root of that problem was watered and fed by a man people are calling one of our best presidents. The verdict. Yar'adua governed during the easiest economic conditions any Nigerian president ever had. Highest oil prices in history. Money everywhere. And he still expanded subsidy, cancelled refinery privatisation and left the structures that bled this country for the next 15 years completely intact. He was popular because he kept fuel cheap. That's a man spending your savings to make you like him. Tinubu is the one paying the bill Yar'adua left behind. And Nigerians are calling Tinubu the bad one
